"Phelly" is an all-the-time friend for children and a tool for parents and carers which utilises social & emotional learning, psychology-based strategies, Neuro-Linguistic Programming techniques, story-telling, playlists, problem-solving worksheets, kids meditation and messages of support to help children build the resilience and tools they need to cope with the nuances of life.
Phelly helps children understand and deal with;
Pheletant the Elephant aka "Phelly" is an all-the-time friend for children and a vehicle for them to signal when they are feeling overwhelmed, anxious or that something isn't quite right (especially when articulation is a hurdle).
Phelly also helps parents instigate conversations with their children and encourages two-way open communication during an important journey in all of their lives. Providing conversation pieces, Phelly helps families make memories and assists in creating deeper connections.
Communicating with Phelly
Young children display their emotions with facial expressions and/or actions, such as laughing, cuddling, crying and similar. They feel and show emotions, but they don't yet necessarily have the ability to name the emotion or say why they feel that way. And at other times, they are reluctant to articulate why.
Siblings, in particular, of children suffering from life-limiting illnesses often find it hard to put their feelings into words, no matter the age.
Phelly can help in this instance, as children immediately bond with an all-the-time friend who helps them feel better about things and is always there for a cuddle when words don’t suffice or no one is around.
Phelly can also be used as a signal to others; putting Phelly in a special spot when the child needs a little assistance, or by using the emoticon sheets supplied, to flag that they need a bit of extra support.
Something for everyone
The key benefit to Phelly is that he/she provides an individual service to suit the different nuances of each child.
An all-the-time friend for home
Grief is something everyone deals with individually, however, the problem is when you are caught up in your own, it is often hard to think about someone else's. For siblings, this is an ongoing difficulty through their brother or sisters life, but also after their passing, as such, Phelly helps grieving parents ensure that their remaining child is equally supported through their grief too.
In the Phelly Starter Pack, you get:
IN ADDITION; you also get:
I’ve experienced the murder of my brother at 17, my sister spending many many years at Westmead Children's Hospital and eventually passing away from Cystic Fibrosis, divorce, financial hardship, my father - and hero - passing from leukemia far too soon, my mother understandably struggling with depression and my 7 and 8 year old children suffering from bullying and perfectionism respectively.
We now watch our children struggle; grieving 4 deaths in 3 years, with identifying their feelings, thoughts and handling the circumstances of their environments and their fears of what the future holds.
As such, we wanted to create a product, and a service, that not only helps parents with their children, but is something children want to be a part of and are actively engaged in, so as a consequence; their love for the product helps them learn the most valuable lessons they need in a loving, caring and supportive way, and provides them with support when words are not enough.
We want children to know that how they think and how they interpret the world will help them in their experience of the world and with their problems.
Ultimately, all children should feel loved and supported and if we can help them talk through and manage their thoughts and emotions, we know can help improve the last moments of their lives.
Phelly has been introduced in different ways to a number of families, as well as childcare facilities including The Kids Castle OOSH and Only About Children Day Care.
Phelly magically appeared one day with the story book and a note to introduce himself. Roy (Director) read the Story of Me to the children, suggesting they then approach Phelly and whisper in his ear any problems they may like Phelly’s help with. (Phelly Time)
At first, no one moved. Then one child approached Phelly and whispered “I love you”. Other children began to approach Phelly. As such, Roy became aware of various issues children were having that he (and their parents) did not otherwise know about.
Many of these were addressed in the Starter Pack cards, with one or two outliers (which we wrote new cards for immediately.)
When the cards from Phelly arrived, Roy read them and discussed them with the children.
A Year 3 boy has his own Phelly at home and divulged to the children in Kids Castle the funny places he finds him and how he is an amazing BFF that he sleeps with and makes him feel safe. This reassured the children Phelly was always there for them (even when they can’t see him).
Phelly is currently in use within the Only About Children Day Care Centre in Neutral Bay.
Working with centre Director, Ashley, we have received detailed feedback on the benefits OAC has in using Phelly with their children.
We are also currently in discussions with the Department of Education, as well as the Catholic Education Office Programs Officer.
There are a few parents currently successfully utilising Phelly for their children and various issues they face.
Phelly appears to be a huge hit with the children and parents who currently make the most of him (or her).
